When Are We Complete?

Are we ever complete in our lives?

This question is entirely subjective.

Based on our experience.

Based upon where we think we are at any given time.

If we don’t look or ask, we may never know…

We can at times find ourselves in a state of pure bliss, feeling a deep sense of wholeness. These momentary wholesome experiences we wish we could freeze so we could enjoy them forever. It could be sitting on the beach, at sunset, with loved ones or friends, having truly engaging conversations. It could be the first bite of that wholesome nourishing meal you have prepared for yourself. Or even, the feeling after catching your breath after a good bout of exercise.

These are the intersections of our lives where we feel like us the most, knowing that there is no place that we would rather be than right there and then, fully present in that moment.

Unfortunately for most, these experiences can be few and far between.

In our fast-paced world, which is becoming faster and faster we find ourselves being constantly stretched in every direction almost every minute of our experience. We find that at times we don’t even stop to take a breath. Jumping and leaping from one thing to the next, our minds continually working on overdrive to always be two steps ahead.

We think we need to have control over all the events in our lives, with the thought that by having control we can predict the score, thinking this will make the path ahead ever clearer.

This means that most of our days we sit in the known, with the belief that by harnessing control we can make our lives better.

We create so much structure around ourselves that we can almost feel trapped, and at times, unable to see what lies outside this cage we have put ourselves in.

This fortress around us becomes stronger the longer we stay in it.

As the walls get thicker, less light makes it in.

And then…

Our structure and rigidity forms an impenetrable jail for our conditioned soul, confined to what it knows, only so, unable to escape.

Sometimes the only way to break a wall down is for a big earthquake to hit our lives. An event to rattle the foundations of who we have become. Something catastrophic that cracks open a wall, shining in light that gives us a lifeline to change.

These course corrections aren’t necessary for all and are certainly not something I wish upon anyone. However, when we are so far removed from who we are, this may be the only way to wake up from the sedation and conditioning of our lives.

This world is just as strange to me as it is to you and everyone else. It is alive, forever moving, and changing all the time.

To be in flow with life, we must embrace change, we must choose to be open to the expanse that lies beyond the paths we have trodden.

Don’t get me wrong though, change can come in many other ways. A blessing in our lives like a new partner, a new opportunity or the beauty of a newborn child can spark the fire within us to awaken to who we are.

We may then be willing to do the work, willing to rise to the challenge, willing and able to leave behind the parts of us that no longer need to operate.

If either a disaster or a blessing can force us to change for the better, there must be other ways, right?

Of course, there is. It is about connecting to the moments we feel truly alive, the moments that we wish we could freeze in time. This is when we find ourselves in a state of pure presence with no thoughts of the past or future.

With practice, we can bring this state of being into any point in our lives and the more we practice aligning with what we are doing the more present we become.

Remember that.

Change is eternal, it is simply the continual unfolding of life.

We are then complete when we live in the present moment, in a state of pure engagement with the life that unfolds for us, free from the control that grips our every move, removed from our attachments, able to be centred and forever embracing the everchanging nature of reality.
